For Ms. Tamika Keene Reid, the 5K-4th enhanced learning teacher at Virtus Academy of South Carolina, the path to the classroom was anything but predictable. Growing up as the youngest of three, she rarely spent time around small children and spent her early college years pursuing a degree in chemistry. However, the birth of her first daughter sparked a profound shift in perspective. Watching her child reach milestones and develop a sense of wonder completely transformed Ms. Reid’s career goals. She realized her true calling wasn’t in a laboratory, but in fostering that same growth and discovery in a classroom setting.
This newfound passion led her to Florence-Darlington Technical College, where she earned an Associate’s degree in Human Services, followed by studies at Coker College and Francis Marion University. Even when offered a faster route to graduation through an Elementary Education degree, Ms. Reid chose the longer, more specialized path of Early Childhood Education. Her commitment to the youngest learners eventually expanded to include certifications in Early Childhood Special Education and, most recently, Gifted and Talented education in March 2026.
Now in her twelfth year of teaching, Ms. Reid brings a wealth of experience to Virtus Academy of South Carolina. Her career spans three years in kindergarten, two in first grade, and seven years working with mixed-age groups. Currently, she serves as a Resource teacher for grades 5K through 4 and leads a second-grade self-contained classroom. While she handles all core subjects, reading remains her favorite to teach. For Ms. Reid, there is nothing more rewarding than helping a child unlock the foundational literacy skills that will serve them for a lifetime.

The impact of her work is best captured in the small, triumphant moments shared with her students. She recalls a particularly moving experience when a third-grade student looked up at her with pure joy and declared, “Mrs. Reid, I can read!” That breakthrough moment of confidence and perseverance is the heartbeat of her career. It serves as a constant reminder that her role is about more than just academics; it is about helping children realize their own potential.
Ms. Reid’s teaching philosophy is rooted in meeting students exactly where they are. She believes in creating a supportive, structured environment where trust and personal connection come first. By utilizing hands-on activities, small-group instruction, and differentiated lessons, she ensures that every child receives the tools they need to succeed. In her classroom, progress is celebrated at every level, and students are encouraged to take risks and build the confidence necessary to grow both personally and academically.
The charter school environment at Virtus Academy provides the perfect backdrop for Ms. Reid’s intentional approach. She values the flexibility and autonomy that allow her to be creative with her instruction. This setting enables her to tailor lessons to the diverse needs of her students in a way that traditional structures might not allow. Furthermore, the close-knit community and collaborative spirit among staff and families create a responsive support system that prioritizes the “whole child.”

Beyond her professional credentials, Ms. Reid’s identity as a mother of five daughters and a grandmother to one granddaughter deeply informs her practice. She credits motherhood with teaching her the patience, nurturing spirit, and understanding that she brings to school every day. This personal experience allows her to connect with her students and their families on a deeper, more empathetic level, recognizing the unique individual inside every child.
Ultimately, Ms. Reid is an educator driven by a genuine love for learning and a commitment to service. Whether she is helping a student sound out their first words or navigating complex social-emotional needs, her goal remains the same: to inspire her students to see the greatness within themselves. At Virtus Academy, she continues to be a cornerstone of support, proving that the best teachers are often those who follow their hearts into the classroom.
